How do we help college students stay in college with financial aid?

Ontrack is a financial aid tool that helps college students identify early financial aid risks that can depress retention and graduation rates.
The problem
Only 41% of U.S. adults over the age of 25 have a bachelor’s or associate’s degree. Students are often juggling school, work, and family while trying to find ways to afford college. In addition, the financial aid renewal process is often complex and hard to understand the requirements needed to maintain the aid. While college enrollment rates have increased, students continue to struggle to finish college, especially when they lose their financial aid midway. Not only do they lose their financial aid, but they often don’t understand why, and end up dropping out of college and affecting the rest of their lives.
What did we think about?
The user experience design of OnTrack from creating an academic profile to helping students identify financial aid risks embodies these three values. Throughout the design process, we asked ourselves:
How can we design a financial aid risk scale that students understand and can use?
How do we design an experience that helps students realize their risks yet inspire them to take action and not give up?
How do we design an experience that enables a student to change their risk level?
